Dhokra or Dokra craft is known for the ‘lost wax casting technique’ of making handicrafts, originated from Paschim BangaL 5000 years ago. Engrained deeply in our roots and named after a group of nomadic craftsmen, this art uses non-ferrous metals to make refined brassware products, mostly for décor purposes. The fascinating process of making a Dhokra artefact involves a clay core that is modelled, in the form of the desired product. This core is then covered with a layer of wax and tar or tar and resin wood gum. The outer layer is shaped and craved with all the fine details. It is covered with clay to form the mould. When this whole mould is baked, the wax gets drained out. Molten metal is then poured, which takes the place of the wax between the core and the inner surface of the mould. The molten metal cools to take the form of the mould and the outer clay coating, is then chipped off, leaving the metal object ready for rubbing and polishing till it shines like old gold or dull silver, depending on the alloy to reveal the final product.
