Madurkathi mats, popularly known as ‘Madur’, are mats weaved from the reed called madhurkathi and are native to the Medinipur district of Paschim Banga. Mat weaving is an ancient craft that has its roots in the Indus Valley Civilization, making it an integral part of the lifestyle of India. They also find references in Indian Literature as ‘grass mats’. There are different types of madhurkathi mats like Ek-Rokha (single mat), Do-Rokha (double mat) and Masland that originate in the Muslim period. Masland mats are woven in the best quality madhurkathi. Mostly used for bedding and sitting, these mats are known for the insulation it provides, giving a cosy feel to your relaxing time.
